Brief Introduction of Oleic acid CAS 112-80-1
Oleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. It exists widely in animal fats and vegetable oils. Commercially, it is divided into Animal Oleic Acid and Vegetable Oleic Acid according to raw materials. Low congealing point grade vegetable oleic acid is produced by fractionation process to meet low-temperature application demands.
Key Physicochemical Properties
- Appearance: Pale yellow to amber oily liquid at room temperature
- Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and hydrocarbon solvents
- Stable under normal conditions, prone to oxidation and discoloration under high temperature or strong light
- Distinct difference between animal & vegetable types in iodine value and congealing point
Main Applications
Used to manufacture surfactants, emulsifiers, lubricants and rust inhibitors for metalworking, leather fatliquoring, textile auxiliaries, plastic & rubber additives, and also as raw material for fatty acid derivatives synthesis. Food/pharma grade oleic acid can be applied in food additives and pharmaceutical excipients.
Grade Differentiation
Animal Oleic Acid: Iodine value 80–100 gI₂/100g; conventional grades Y-4/Y-8/Y-10 classified by congealing point
Vegetable Oleic Acid: Iodine value 110–130 gI₂/100g; regular congealing point 12~16℃, special fractionated low-titer grade ≤4℃ available.Physical properties
